‘The passages he addresses directly to Phoebe are as tender as the father-daughter letters in Karl Ove Knausgaard’s Seasons Quartet’ Times Literary Supplement ‘This book tells the inspiring story of how even the least skilled of us can make something wonderful if we invest enough time and love’ The Daily Mail 'Both the book, and place, are magical' The Sunday Telegraph 'When Jonathan Gornall decided to build a boat for his daughter, he had no experience and no practical skills. What followed was a very real labour of love.' The Scotsman One man learns the ancient skills of boat-building to connect with fatherhood. How to Build a Boat is the story of a thoroughly unskilled modern man who, inspired by his love of the sea and what it has taught him about life, sets out to build a traditional wooden boat as a gift for his newborn daughter. It is, he recognises, a ridiculously quixotic challenge for a man who, with a family and mortgage to support, knows little about woodworking and even less about boat-building. He isn’t even sure what type of boat he should build, what type of wood he should use, the tools he will need or, come to that, where on earth he will build it. He has much to consider, and even more to learn. But, undaunted by his ignorance, he embarks on a voyage of rediscovery, determined to navigate his way back to a time when a man could fashion his future and leave his mark on history using only time-honoured skills and the ancient tools and materials at hand. The journey begins with a search for clues in the once bustling, but now still, creeks and backwaters of his beloved Suffolk, where men once fashioned the might of Nelson’s navy from the great oaks that shadowed the water’s edge. If all goes to plan, it will end with a great little adventure, as father and daughter cast off together for a voyage of discovery that neither will forget, and both will treasure until the end of their days. A writer following in the bestselling footsteps of Adam Nicolson, Tim Moore and Charlie Connelly – discovering what make modern man tick through the discovery of a craft long forgotten.

Santa Fe photographer Joan Alessi provides a polychromatic exposition of New Mexico's traditional roadside memorials, descansos, as an art form. Her stunning photography captures the artistic attributes of these decorative crosses while preserving their religious and cultural integrity. Sylvia Grider's accompanying essay explains the origin and folkloric tradition of roadside memorials. These religious markers are not in themselves unique to the southwestern United States. Rather, they are a universal phenomenon with a long and curious history. The term descanso (literally translated as |resting place|), however, may have indeed originated among the Spanish-speaking vecinos of New Mexico. |The descansos contained in this book are a reflection of both the emotion and dedication of the devotees as they mourn the passing and celebrate the life of the beloved.|--Art Gómez, National Park Service, supervisory historian; (coauthor)New Mexico: Images of a Land and Its People(UNM Press)

The True Gospel Preached Here PDF
By:Bruce West
Published on 2014-04-10 by Univ. Press of Mississippi

Bruce West's color photographs document the spiritual and creative work of a self-proclaimed preacher, artist, architect, the Reverend H. D. Dennis, and his wife, Margaret, in Vicksburg, Mississippi. This book explores the fantastic world of the elderly couple who devoted more than twenty years of their lives to converting Margaret's Grocery store into a one-of-a-kind nondenominational church. Guided by visions from God, their elaborate transformation of Margaret's Grocery involved the construction of several towers, the creation of the Ark of the Covenant containing tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments, and new religious iconography. A sign at the entrance announced: |Welcome Jews and Gentile This Church Open 24 Hours a Day.| Another sign promised: |The True Gospel Preached Here.| Bands of high-gloss red, white, blue, green, yellow, and pink paint covered the towers and exterior. Religious artifacts, Mardi Gras beads, plastic flowers, hubcaps, and flashing Christmas lights encrusted the interior walls and ceilings and an old school bus. The Reverend used his church as a roadside attraction to lure seekers so that he could deliver fiery sermons and orations about the need to |practice living perfectly| and the ceaseless pursuit of spiritual wisdom. The product of twenty years of labor and multiple site visits, West's photographs are both intimate and transparent, tenderly revealing the Reverend and Margaret's love of God and for one another, their commitment to their work, and their shared transformation while aging together. The images offer unique insights into the role of spirituality in southern folk art and creativity and the joys and demands of an ascetic and inspired life.

Fifty-Five Portraits and Self-Portraits PDF

This book contains fifty-eight portraits in color as well as black and white of humans, animals and mannequins in the most varied situations. Animals are presented dead and alive. This is why this collection is not intended for children of short age. The main reason why I include portraits of animals and mannequins is that, to me, they are also photographic objects with subjective value, both for humans and in themselves, at least as far as animals are concerned. Thus, when a sheep or a horse looks at us, the animal is conveying its subjective world to us, which we can only partly guess. For...who knows what is going on in the mind of the animal when it looks at us?. We can only guess the feelings through the look, that resembles our look in so many ways: tiredness, fear, anger, questioning, incomprehension, desire to reach to us and to understand us... we can feel their own feelings because we share an animal nature. In this respect, this collection contributes to improve the value of animals as sentient beings that deserve respect from humans. When we look a the dead face of a pig, we understand the value of life and also the value of death and of meat because we are actually looking at the face of a creature that has suffered an insensitive end of life at our hands so that we can continue to live, or at least, those who eat pork. The contemplation of animal portraits makes us question our own identity and how far psychologically we are from each other. We share many feelings with animals and we can find the same feelings that always occupy us in the portraits of animals. Also, I find certain mannequins fascinating as photographic objects. There is a feeling of unease when one looks at the eyes of some mannequins. Does their realistic look instill in us the feeling that they are alive?. Does our brain cheat us into feeling that a non-animated object is somewhat animated with the spark of life, only because of our contemplation of its eyes?. In some photographs, it is obvious that the mannequin is not alive. In others, the doubt can arise. In this respect, mannequins fulfill the role of ancient magical objects animated with life, such us lightning, the sky and its clouds, the sun, the moon, mountains, rocks and minerals of nature...all of them religious objects of different creeds. Mannequins are in fact the new religious objects of Mankind, this time around with commercial objectives. Perhaps religion was nothing else than a commercial enterprise to organize life among humans and a tool for some to exert their domination over the majority. In the collection, there are a number of self-portraits to be found too. I have tried to avoid the typical modern selfie-attitude and looked for atypical situations instead, trying to reach an artistic quality. The spectator will judge whether I have achieved my objective or not. In any case, the photographs do not intend to mimic reality. These are photographs intended for the visual pleasure as well. Therefore, I have taken on the subject with the intention of satisfying my aesthetic criteria. Reality can be exceedingly boring but, applying imagination to it, it can also be the departure point of an artistic investigation of the possibilities of form, light and color. The photographs here presented were taken in Ireland, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Belgium.
