Titanic was meant to be another success in a litany of past glories for the White Star Line. Her fate was an unexpected shock and global tragedy, ensuring her immortality in the minds of millions even 100 years later. But her untimely demise often overshadows her remarkable life - the distinguished heritage of her fleet, the ingenuity of those who built her and the dedication of those who worked on board, many of whom would later become heroes. Titanic Unseen provides a unique insight into what it meant to build, deploy and operate the great ships of the White Star Line in the Titanic era. Weaving together images from the evocative albums of White Star crew member Philip Bell and Harland & Wolff engineer John Kempster, it is a revelatory portrait of this iconic vessel.

|I share the country's admiration for the bravery of Captain Phillips and his selfless concern for his crew. His courage is a model for all Americans.| --President Barack Obama It was just another day on the job for fifty-three-year-old Richard Phillips, captain of the Maersk Alabama, the United States-flagged cargo ship which was carrying, among other things, food and agricultural materials for the World Food Program. That all changed when armed Somali pirates boarded the ship. The pirates didn't expect the crew to fight back, nor did they expect Captain Phillips to offer himself as hostage in exchange for the safety of his crew. Thus began the tense five-day stand-off, which ended in a daring high-seas rescue when U.S. Navy SEALs opened fire and picked off three of the captors. |It never ends like this,| Captain Phillips said. And he's right. A Captain's Duty tells the life-and-death drama of the Vermont native who was held captive on a tiny lifeboat off Somalia's anarchic, gun-plagued shores. A story of adventure and courage, it provides the intimate details of this high-seas hostage-taking--the unbearable heat, the death threats, the mock executions, and the escape attempt. When the pirates boarded his ship, Captain Phillips put his experience into action, doing everything he could to safeguard his crew. And when he was held captive by the pirates, he marshaled all his resources to ensure his own survival, withstanding intense physical hardship and an escalating battle of wills with the pirates. This was it: the moment where training meets instinct and where character is everything. Richard Phillips was ready.

This small collection of poetry was inspired by the extensive gardens surrounding the “Bahá'i Holy Places in Haifa and the Western Galilee,” a United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List property located in and near the city of Haifa, Israel. While several of the poems resonate with the spiritual experience of pilgrimage in Israel others address broader issues of life such as the supportive relationship between a mother and her daughter, the slower pace of life after retirement from a high stress job, and the struggle for acceptance by those who are different. They vary in form from free verse to more rhythmic and rhymed lines, from the energetic cadence of |Room to Bloom| to the gentle lilt of |Where Do They Live?| and from the lighthearted |Flowers Reaching to the Sun| to the more serious |Spiritual But Not Religious.| The gardens and the buildings they surround represent heritage considered to have “outstanding universal value” and attract millions of visitors from all over the world every year. They provide a distinctive landmark on the slopes of Mt Carmel as well as an oasis of quiet and peace within the bustle and noise of city life and are the result of many years of planning, engineering, construction, and care. Those located at the sites outside the city are impressive and inspirational settings for the buildings within them. The photographs are part of a larger collection taken during the summer of 2012.

The Life and Photography of Doris Ulmann PDF
By:Philip Walker Jacobs

Doris Ulmann (1882-1934) was one of the foremost photographers of the twentieth century, yet until now there has never been a biography of this fascinating, gifted artist. Born into a New York Jewish family with a tradition of service, Ulmann sought to portray and document individuals from various groups that she feared would vanish from American life. In the last eighteen years of her life, Ulmann created over 10,000 photographs and illustrated five books, including Roll, Jordan, Roll and Handicrafts of the Southern Highlands. Inspired by the paintings of the European old masters and by the photographs of Hill and Adamson and Clarence White, Ulmann produced unique and substantial portrait studies. Working in her Park Avenue studio and traveling throughout the east coast, Appalachia, and the deep South, she carefully studied and photographed the faces of urban intellectuals as well as rural peoples. Her subjects included Albert Einstein, Robert Frost, African American basket weavers from South Carolina, and Kentucky mountain musicians. Relying on newly discovered letters, documents, and photographs -- many published here for the first time -- Philip Jacobs's richly illustrated biography secures Ulmann's rightful place in the history of American photography.
